The word alchemy has two lives. In its historical form it refers to the medieval pursuit of turning base metals into gold, a practice rooted in early chemistry, philosophy and esoteric symbolism. In its spiritual form, which is how it has been used in personal development and energy work for centuries, alchemy describes an inner process: the transmutation of what is dense, blocked or unresolved in a person into something more refined, more conscious and more aligned.
Carl Jung drew extensively on alchemical symbolism to describe the process of psychological individuation. In contemporary holistic and coaching practice, the framework has been developed further. The seven classical stages of alchemy, calcination, dissolution, separation, conjunction, fermentation, distillation and coagulation, map directly onto recognisable stages of inner work: breaking down the ego and limiting beliefs, dissolving old emotional patterns, separating what serves you from what does not, integrating opposing aspects of yourself, and ultimately emerging with a more grounded, unified and purposeful identity.
