Mindfulness-based cognitive coaching integrates the principles of mindfulness practice with cognitive and behavioural coaching frameworks. It helps clients develop greater awareness of their thought patterns, emotional responses and habitual behaviours, and uses presence-based techniques alongside practical coaching tools to support lasting change. It draws on the evidence base of Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) and Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) but is applied in a coaching rather than therapeutic context.
In coaching, mindfulness is used in multiple ways: as a practice the coach develops in themselves to bring more presence and quality of attention to sessions, as a technique taught directly to clients to help them develop self-awareness and emotional regulation, and as a framework for understanding how a client's habitual thinking patterns are maintaining the issues they bring. Mindfulness techniques used in coaching include focused breathing, body scan awareness, cognitive defusion exercises and reflective practices that interrupt automatic responses.

Meditation is a formal practice with a defined beginning and end, typically involving a specific technique such as focused attention, guided visualisation or breathwork. Mindfulness is a quality of awareness: the capacity to pay attention to the present moment with openness and without judgment. Mindfulness can be practised formally through meditation and informally throughout daily life. In coaching, both are used, but mindfulness as an orientation toward experience tends to be more consistently applicable across the full range of coaching work.
